A client’s and patient’s rights

A patient in health care and a client in social welfare has the right to treatment and services that are appropriate and of good quality. Patients and clients must be treated without violating their human dignity, beliefs or privacy. A person in need of help has the right to receive social welfare and health care services within the time limit laid down by law.

Processing of client data

In order to provide safe care and services, Soite’s staff needs up-to-date and necessary patient and client data. Clients themselves can influence, through consents and prohibitions, how and where they allow their information to be used.

Data protection

The primary purpose of social welfare client records and health care patient records is to provide services to clients and care to patients. These records are classified as confidential under the Act on the Status and Rights of Patients and the Act on the Status and Rights of Social Welfare Clients.

Choosing the place of non-urgent care

A client may change his/her place of care within Soite even for just one visit without a separate written notification. A person may choose a health care centre/health care station for his/her primary health care anywhere in mainland Finland. This does not apply to school healthcare, student healthcare, long-term institutional care, occupational health care or home nursing outside one’s own region.

Acting on behalf of another person

In Soite, it is possible to act on behalf of another person by issuing an authorisation for managing affairs, or with the consent of a child/adolescent.

Treatment and patient data about a minor

When treating a minor patient, their opinion must be taken into account whenever possible considering the minor’s age and level of development. A minor who is capable of deciding on their own care is treated in cooperation with them, and they also have the right to refuse treatment.

Continuing power of attorney

Through a continuing power of attorney, a person can make sure in advance that his/her affairs will be manged even if s/he is later incapable of doing so himself/herself e.g. because of deteriorating health.

A living will

A living will is a patient’s expression of their wishes concerning future care. If a patient wants to express their wishes regarding care for the future, for example in the event of a sudden accident or unconsciousness, clear documentation confirmed by the patient themselves must be made in their medical records, or a separate document expressing the patient’s wishes must be attached to them. In a living will, the patient may, for example, forbid resuscitation.

Correction of data in a register

As the controller, Soite is obliged to, on its own initiative, correct, erase, supplement or rectify any inaccurate, incomplete or outdated information it has detected in its documents. A client has the right to request the correction, erasure or supplementation of inaccurate or incomplete information concerning themselves that has been recorded in documents. A guardian may submit a correction request on behalf of a minor.
