The paedicatric ward and neonatal intensive care unit
Ward 1 for children and adolescents treats children who need hospital care. The care of a child is carried out on the ward only if the care cannot equally well be carried out at home or on the outpatient clinic. Parents have the opportunity and are encouraged to be involved in the care of the child throughout the entire hospitalization.

Visits
There are no visiting hours on the paediatric ward. During epidemics, there are separate instructions on visits.
The paediatric ward
On the ward for children, we examine and treat children and adolescents under the age of 16-18 whose symptoms or illness requires specialised medical care. Soite’s ward for children treats patients in all specialties. The most common reason for children’s need of care on the ward are different infectious diseases. The ward also invites children for examination periods and sometimes the ward cares for children with long-term illness.
As a rule, patients come to the ward via the paediatric emergency clinic. Patients also come with emergency referrals directly from other units in Soite (e.g. the surgical ward) or as hospital transfers from other hospitals.
The neonatal intensive care unit
The neonatal intensive care unit cares for newborn babies who are seriously ill and the neonatal monitoring unit treats newborn babies who are in need of special care as well as growing premature babies.
The paediatric ward and the neonatal intensive care unit have, in all, room for 16 patients.
Taking care of your own child on the ward
On our ward, the parents’ visiting hours are not limited. The parents can care for their child throughout the child’s entire stay at the hospital.
The goal with this cooperation between parents and nursing staff is to provide the best possible care for the child. The mother or father can spend the night by the child’s side.
A team of professionals from different fields
Successful care of a child requires the expertise of many people. The medical care of children is the responsibility of paediatricians on the outpatient clinic and a senior physician (a specialist in paediatrics on the ward) together with specialists in other specialties.
In addition to them, the ward cooperates closely with a psychologist, a psychiatric nurse, a physiotherapist, a rehabilitation counselor for children, a dietician, a diabetes nurse for children, a social worker, speech therapist and occupational therapist, taking into account the individual needs of the child.
Experts in nursing in the care of the child are the nurses and paediatric practical nurses on the outpatient clinic and ward. They work in shifts. Even so, our goal is that the same nurses take care of the child during the entire hospital stay.
The senior physician’s working hours are Mon-Fri from 8 AM to 3 PM. At other times, the ward’s child patients are treated by the paediatrician who is on call. The senior physician is the treating physician for a child patient on the ward. Parents are asked to turn to the senior physician in matters concerning the care of the child. In urgent matters, the child’s care can also be discussed with the paediatrician who is on call.
Schoolchildren in longer-term care on the ward receive individual teaching from a teacher who visits the ward.
In addition to our staff, there are health care students studying childcare on the ward for children in the autumn and spring.
