A school social worker works at a school as an expert on the social environment and interaction to support the students’ school attendance and well-being. Pupils, students and guardians can contact the school social worker directly or through a teacher, public health nurse or other cooperation partner by phone or a message.

School social work is based on voluntariness and confidentiality. The school social worker participates in the development and implementation of community-based student care work together with other actors within student care and education.

The school social worker offers support to pupils and students, for example with:

  • Challenges in school attendance, such as motivation problems and absences
  • Challenges in social relationships, such as relationships with friends and family
  • Mild mood disorders
  • Applying for Kela benefits, especially in secondary education
  • Applying for other assistance

The school social worker services are free of charge.
