The aim of the national vaccination programme is to use vaccines to protect the population from infectious diseases. The decree 421/2004 by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health provides instructions concerning the vaccination programme. Vaccinations are voluntary and free of charge.

Children under school age receive vaccinations that are included in the national vaccination programme at maternity, child health and birth control clinics. School-age children and students are vaccinated by a public health nurse in school health care or student health care.

Maternity, child health and birth control clinics also give basic vaccinations for adults and vaccination guidance for persons who are going on a trip. Vaccinations that are included in the national vaccination programme are free of charge.

Booking an appointment for a vaccination that is included in the national vaccination programme

As a rule, vaccinations are given at appointments that have been booked in advance.

Until further notice, appointments can only be booked by phone.

Vaccinations by age

In Finland, children and adolescents have the opportunity to get vaccinated against eleven different diseases and against secondary diseases caused by them and their long-term effects. When it comes to the vaccinations that are included in the vaccination programme, the vaccination coverage in Finland is excellent, and many diseases that are vaccinated against have become very rare or have completely disappeared from Finland.

It is important that when vaccinations are given a child or an adolescent, a booster dose is given when they are an adult.

Booster doses for basic vaccinations for adults are given in occupational health services, at maternity, child health and birth control clinics and in student health care. Basic vaccinations are free of charge.

Those who are 65 years of age or older may book an appointment for a vaccination with a health service point for seniors.

Adults must make sure themselves that they have received at least three tetanus, diphtheria and polio vaccinations as a basic series of vaccinations.
