Health examinations for different age groups

Health examinations are organised for children under school age, schoolchildren, students and seniors, taking into account the issues that are relevant at each stage of life.

    Health examinations for children who are not yet in primary school

    The key purposes of health examinations for children who are not yet in primary school include monitoring the child’s health status, growth and overall development, as well as examining and supporting the wellbeing of the whole family. Health examinations at child health clinics are arranged according to the age of the child to a public health nurse and a child health clinic doctor.

    The purpose of health examinations is to check the child’s growth, development and wellbeing according to their age and individual need. During visits, the child is given vaccines that are included in the national vaccination programme.

    The whole family is welcome to a visit to a child health clinic. In addition to the examination, the purpose of a visit to a clinic is to strengthen the resources of the parents when it comes to child-oriented upbringing and good care of the child, as well as when it comes to caring for themselves and their relationship.

    A doctor and a public health nurse are present at the examinations by a doctor at a child health clinic.

    In an extensive health examination, a public health nurse and a doctor assess the health of the child and the wellbeing of the whole family. The examination includes an interview with the guardians and checking the wellbeing of the whole family. Extensive health examinations also include an assessment of the child by the early childhood education and care if the child is in day care.

    At the end of the examination, an assessment of the child’s health status and of the child’s possible need of further examinations, support and treatment will be carried out together with the guardians and the child. We ask the parents to prepare for extensive health examinations by filling out the forms that may be associated with the examination.

    Health examinations in school health care

    School health care include annual health examinations, of which 1st, 5th and 8th grade health examinations are extensive. At an extensive health examination, the wellbeing of a child/youth and the whole family is assessed. We ask the parents/guardians to take part in extensive health examinations.

    Health examinations in student health care

    Student health care includes upper secondary level students and students at universities and universities of applied sciences. Health examinations are provided for students in the first year. Student health care must promote the student’s ability to work and study by supporting the student’s physical and mental resources, by ensuring a good physical study environment and well-functioning working arrangements, and by paying attention to the wellbeing of the student community.

    Health examinations for seniors

    Health examinations for 67- and 75-year-old persons consist of examining the client’s health and wellbeing in a multifaceted way, examining possible ways to promote their ability to function and potential risks of illness and of going through laboratory results. They are sent a personal invitation to a health examination. A personal wellness plan is drawn up together for every client.

    Age group-specific health examinations focus on issues relevant to each life stage. Child welfare clinics conduct extensive health examinations for children aged 4 months, 18 months and 4 years. These examinations focus on to the child’s health, growth and development, as well as any special needs.

    Extensive health examinations for schoolchildren are organised in the first, fifth and eighth grade. In addition to the child’s or young person’s growth and development, the examination assesses the wellbeing of their entire family. In student health care services, a public health nurse’s examination is arranged for students in upper secondary schools and vocational institutions during their first year of study, as well as a medical examination during the first or second year of study, unless a medical examination is carried out at the point of admission. A health survey is organised for higher education students during their first year of study, on the basis of which a health examination can be carried out if necessary. These health examinations focus on the student’s health and wellbeing as well as other aspects that affect their studies as a whole.

    In addition to basic examinations, the health examinations offered to elderly people can be used to assess their memory, functional capacity, mental alertness and ability to cope independently. These examinations are organised by the health and social services centre.
